Boston, MA - The University of Kentucky’s Markey Cancer Center (MCC) wanted a better way to streamline and automate the accounting and management of its core facilities. After investigating various systems, MCC selected iLab Solutions’ core facility management platform as the best solution to meet its needs. This partnership will see iLab’s software integrated into four of MCC’s core facilities, including the Biospecimen and Tissue Procurement, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Cancer Research Informatics, and Free Radical Biology and Metabolism.
Dr. Heidi Weiss, MCC’s Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Director and Associate Director for Shared Resources, said that “the MCC is committed to satisfy NCI’s standards of efficient operations and effective integration of core facilities with our scientific programs which will ultimately provide added value to the success of the cancer centers’ population science, basic, and translational research endeavors. Our partnership with iLab will be a critical move to achieve the goal of delivering outstanding, timely and cost-efficient core facility services and collaborations.”
“We are excited to work with the Markey Cancer Center,” stated Heather Lorenz, iLab VP, Business Development. “Our partnership will ensure a premier standard for its shared resource operations, reduce administrative burden, and meet the specific needs of the individual core facilities.”
Years of experience have given iLab a proven track record of working closely with its clients to develop systems and processes that increase both core utilization and organization. iLab’s uniform display and search feature will ensure researchers can easily find the MCC resources and services available to them, and administrators will be able to use this tool to easily generate and review reports showing usage across cores as well as providing insight into usage within a single core.
Part of the agreement between MCC and iLab includes integration with MCC’s financial management system. This will provide a single and consistent interface for billing and financial management while reducing errors and increasing cost recovery. This automated process occurs at both the core and institution level.
iLab Solutions is the leader in streamlining shared resource operations through use of its web-based core facility management software. Over 115 academic research institutions worldwide use iLab, including top US NCI-designated Cancer Centers.

About Markey: The Lucille P. Markey Cancer Center is a premier cancer research center and patient care facility that operates as an integral component of the University of Kentucky (UK) and the UK HealthCare enterprise. Markey’s basic, translational, and clinical research efforts support the cancer center’s mission of reducing cancer mortality in Kentucky through a comprehensive program of cancer research, treatment, education and community engagement, with a particular focus on the underserved population of Appalachian Kentucky. Notable research successes include a robust body of groundbreaking cancer prevention and control work in Appalachian Kentucky, nationally acclaimed basic research programs in cancer biology and DNA repair and oxidative stress, and advanced research into translational cancer therapeutics. In July 2013, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded the Markey Cancer Center status as an NCI-designated Cancer Center, a designation that will help Markey’s clinical practitioners and researchers further its mission and better serve the Kentucky and Appalachian Kentucky populations.
